The falling of the walls generated a transformative effect in Barcelona that spread to the rest of Catalonia. The yearnings, excitement and energy of the inhabitants of the old walled city burst into spectacular economic, social and cultural growth.

In this era of change, Catalan civil society was the key element that provided the determination and vitality needed to face this transformation; with creativity, enthusiasm and a will to progress that were decisive for the outbreak of Modernism, an artistic and cultural movement that changed the city and the country forever.

The current exhibition of Centre d’Art Amatller explores the origins of Modernism and offers the opportunity to live different experiences through interactive and traditional museography.

The floor -1 of Centre d’Art Amatller is dedicated to the dragons of Modernism, with a different vision of the history of Barcelona and its relationship with this fantastic creature.

For centuries, dragons have fueled legends and inspired stories. If we jump to the 19th century, Casa Amatller is no exception either: we see them snaking around in the form of sculptures and gargoyles, finishing off wrought iron details and decorating the façade. We can spot them throughout the city and the territory, starring in our traditions and taking over our festivities. Even in the 21st century, dragons continue to seduce us as protagonists of the greatest phenomena of popular audiovisual culture through cinema, TV shows and video games.

“Dragons, Legends of Fire” makes us travel around the world through two very powerful audiovisual experiences. The floor -1 of Centre d’Art Amatller has an Immersive Room with a surface area of ​​almost 400 m², where a 360° film is projected based on the myths and legends of dragons as mythological figures in Catalonia and around the world. Next is the VR Room, equipped with virtual reality glasses with which visitors can travel inside the house and fly over the 1900 Barcelona on top of one of the small dragons that form a decorative part of the lampposts at the entrance of Casa Amatller.
